Cruise ship fire in Larnaca

More than 50 passengers and crew members were rescued close to the coast of Larnaca, Thursday evening, after a fire broke aboard cruise ship.

The vessel, submissions shall be deemed to have caught lit after a battery of engine short circuited around for 8 hours, while the vessel was only 500 m from the beach of Phinikoudes.

On board were six crew and 52 passengers from England, Cyprus and Russia.

A boat carrying five members of the fire service police arrived on the scene within ten minutes of receipt of the appeal, which then extinguished flammes.Ensuite, all passengers and crew were rescued by boat private without prejudice.

Shortly after 10 p.m., the vessel was towed in port Larnaca, where the damage was still examined last night.

Michael Katsounotos police spokesman said yesterday that the vessel had a certificate of safety which was valid until December 2010 and was therefore permitted to sail

Asked about complaints from owners of vessels has been provided with equipment appropriate to fight the fire, fire chief Izekil said Papadopoulos-Larnaca "Fire Department does not lend to its Specialized equipement for persons trained never .it ' is a question of pubic health and safety"

The vessel will now examined by the Ministry of maritime transport which will assess the airworthiness status.

Katsounotos says henceforth "incidents in the field of search and rescue will be processed by the head of the Centre of coordination for the search and rescue (KSED)"under the Ministry of defence, which has exclusive competence.""
